The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
