The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
