A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
