Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
