England's Coach Southee Unsure on Ashes Availability
The bowler's most recent Test match for the Kiwis was against the English side in December 2024.
England's bowling consultant Southee is currently evaluating the extent of his role will be at the upcoming Ashes series in the host nation.
The ex- Kiwi pace bowler is only likely to be available for the opening match because of his involvement in the ILT20 competition, which begins on December 2 in the United Arab Emirates.
Southee, aged 36, took up a role as the English team's fast bowling consultant in the summer after taking 391 scalps in 107 Test matches for New Zealand.
Commenting as England's team for the opening of three Twenty20 games against New Zealand was named, Southee said of his participation: "We are still evaluating the situation at the moment.
"We'll see the outcome over the next little while."
England bowling legend Broad had declared the Australian team as their "weakest squad since 2010", but the consultant was in little doubt over what to expect during the contest, which begins on 21 November.
"In my view there's at any time a poor Australian cricket team," Southee said.
"The team's attention is squarely on what we're trying to do. I think the quality of [England's] team that's going out to Australia is brilliant.
"It ought to be an thrilling encounter, that series. Not just [are|do] fans from both nations looking forward to it, I believe the whole cricket world is."
However, before England head to Perth for the opening Ashes Test, they take on New Zealand in the city of Christchurch on Saturday.
