Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials voiced fury after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The clip, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in defense or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all made an vow to defend and defend this founding document," the officials affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you must decline improper directives. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our national charter."

Trump's Incensed Reaction

The video message seemed to trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials React

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats released a combined declaration condemning the statements.

"Political violence has no position in America," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with great national pride and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these radical online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.

Officials' Firm Answer

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.

"We identify as veterans and security experts who love this nation and swore an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to honor it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."

Further Political Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the death of elected officials."

He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and unconditionally."

The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the government telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in American history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
