An Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to book lodging upon arrival, but once I got there, a big convention was taking place and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. Unsure of how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near the casino, thinking I could pass the night in a place that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for nailing an interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more folks with such compassion.

I must have looked out of place because a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and wondered if I was OK. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she suggested I could crash on the floor at her university residence at the local university – which was perfect, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her work shift. This gave me a hot shower and a secure location and safe to spend the night.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a young woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – yet deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her good deed many times over. The world needs more people like that woman.
